Drusilla: Our Punk Ophelia
Drusilla is one of my favorite characters and I love her to pieces and Juliet Landau gave a standout performance.

I was thinking about her mental state. She's insane and unhinged, understandably, but she seems to have lucid moments. Do you think that she plays up a crazy psychic act, subconsciously or not, at times? I wonder if her mania is amplified because of her psychic abilities. Your thoughts on Drusilla's frame of mind?

My second musing is about what Drusilla does after she leaves Sunnydale for the last time. Does she feel Spike gain his soul back? Is she traveling the world? Can she see Darla's spirit? Does she know about Connor? She's arguably the lynchpin to the fanged four in many ways (some say Angelus but his actions in btvs s2 & ats s4 don't show that to me). Drusilla is always the one trying to get the family together and her relationship with Darla makes me think that while Dru & Spike traveled by themselves often, they kept in contact with Darla until she was staked the first time. For all her issues, she'll always be a family person at heart. Do you think she would try to make a new family or would she try again to join up with Spike or Angel?

“Insanity is often the logic of an accurate mind overtaxed.” -- Oliver Wendell Holmes

I think to understand Dru you have to remember why she's crazy. As a human she thought she was a devil child because of her psychic abilities and choose to enter a convent, seeking absolution for her "sins". Angelus tormented her, mocking her faith, telling her God had caste his eyes away from her and that he didn't love or want her. The day she took her holy vows, he killed all the inhabitants of her convent and forced her to watch as he and Darla fornicated in the bloodbath.

So, clearly, Dru has issues. Her moments of clarity are just that, fleeting moments. And she usually still speaks insanely even in her more logical times.

I saw Dru as close to all three other Fang Gang members, but it's really only Spike who cares about her. Angelus turned her, yes, but I really got the feeling that he might have only kept her around because she pissed off Darla. Darla showed some kindness to Dru after Dru turned her again, but I've always felt like Dru needed to be needed... which is why she worked so well with Spike.

Angelus tormented her, mocking her faith

He also killed her entire family. Violently. So there's that.

The Island of Dr. Moreau. It's one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but Val is preternaturally gorgeous in it.

It's actually fiendishly clever direction, though; every time I thought, "I'm going to turn this shit off," they had Val take off another article of clothing.

Absolutely. Like Darla -- and, let's face it, not a small number of women in Jossverse, but let's not go there; I don't have the strength -- she's smart enough to let the menfolk do the heavy lifting. All she has to do to get her way is flail around a bit and mutter something about the moon.

Staringiscaring: Anyageekstaringiscaring on November 20th, 2010 01:39 am (UTC)
Yeah, I feel like while in the beginning Drusilla was 100% a victim but as she's aged through the decades, she's learned to manipulate others and control her powers more than some believe.

Hmmm, thats true. Perhaps its a coping mechanism. A way to distance herself from reality.

I can't either but I wonder about that wild vamp chick.

I honestly don't think Drusilla is crazy. She's precognitive, and she sees events out of time. This leads her to perceive things on a much grander scale than the average person, and as a coping mechanism for that vastness she coaches her soothsaying in the familiar and 'safe' narratives of her childhood -- fairy tales, nursery rhymes, et cetera. The things from the life before Angelus unmade and remade her.
Staringiscaring: abedtroystaringiscaring on November 20th, 2010 02:18 am (UTC)
Hmmm, intriguing. I like this theory.

Basically, what's most important about Drusilla is that all her supposedly insane little statements are actually very, very meaningful. She's got her wits about her, and she always means something even when she's being apparently absurd. I'd probably be a bit odd too if I was constantly seeing as far as a hundred and twenty years into the future ("Don't be cross; I could be your Mummy.").

That's what I always thought about her dialogue as well. She knows what shes talking about it, its probably just hard for her to communicate to people who don't have her abilities.

Its too bad that there wasn't a Drusilla-Cordelia scene that touched upon their Sight.

marketchippie and I were talking about them the other day. As 'seers' they're very, very different archetypes. Dru is a pagan oracle with a connection to the celestial. Her Sight is always 'on' and doesn't require direct intercession by the divine. Cordelia, meanwhile, is a Christian ecstatic who gets messages directly from on high.
Staringiscaringstaringiscaring on November 20th, 2010 02:59 am (UTC)
Do you think that before Drusilla was a vampire that she got messages from the PTB? It seemed like her sight came in the sudden and occasional vision when she was human but more unfiltered when she was vamped.
how long do you have to live, karen?: [angel] darla/dru female of the specieseleusis_walks on November 20th, 2010 03:00 am (UTC)
No, I think Dru always had a different sort of power. Her vision of the mine accident was in a dream, wasn't it? And she continues to have prophetic dreams as a vampire. She also knows, the moment she first lays eyes on Angelus, who he is and what he's going to do to her. It's a constant precognition as opposed to Cordelia's sudden bursts.

I've always assumed Dru decides she's tried hard enough, seen all the potential futures, and it's time to build a new family entirely. Mostly I think it's a crying shame she didn't turn up in AtS S5 for a one-off.

Dru was probably one of my least favorites overall, as she never seemed to do anything by herself, her reactions and everything always stemmed from others. Still, I love what Juliet did with what she had to work with.

Ooh, good question. Dru's one of my favorites too.

Others have answered better than I could about whether she's really crazy, but I'm interested in what you say about her being a family person. I think she understood after AtS2 that both Spike and Angel were lost to her, but she probably would get to work on making a new family sooner or later.

It's exactly the kind of human virtue that's retained and perverted when the human is turned evil.
Staringiscaring: Anyageekstaringiscaring on November 20th, 2010 01:51 pm (UTC)
Great icon! I love the fanged four so much!

Do you think that she would be like Angel and find herself people who fit the mold of her previous family?
Avox in Arcadia: Angel came back nekkidperpetual on November 20th, 2010 08:27 pm (UTC)
I think that would probably be more true of her than it was of Angel-- I know his post-soul companions had some intriguing similarities to Darla and Spike and Dru, but I'm inclined to think those were coincidence.

Drusilla, on the other hand, probably has very specific needs to fill. She'd want someone to dominate and hurt her (Angelus), someone to idolize and pamper her (Spike), and someone female to serve as a model and/or opponent as the situation demanded (Darla).
Staringiscaring: lornefredstaringiscaring on November 20th, 2010 08:36 pm (UTC)
Hmmm, intriguing. I'm a rare fan who doesn't mind original characters so this makes me wonder if there are anything post-series Drusilla fics that explore this idea. I think you are right about Drusilla's needs. Though, I think in her own way, Drusilla tended to Spike and his emotional needs pretty well so she needs someone to needs her too.
Avox in Arcadia: My heart belongs to Jossperpetual on November 20th, 2010 08:48 pm (UTC)
Well, you've certainly piqued my interest in finding and/or creating one, if that helps. :)

Drusilla's need to be needed is an excellent addition to the list. Spike always looked like he was taking care of her, but by giving him that kind of importance in her life, she was taking care of him too. And they were very special among vampires-- not too many couples had that kind of mutual devotion. Would Dru be able to recreate it by siring another pansy boy? I'm sure she would at least make an attempt.

That icon makes me LOL 10x.

Yay! If you find any, send the link my way. This whole discussion has made me want to make a five people Drusilla turned kind of a thing, but I'm doing Nano and I've been kicking away the plotbunnies.

They were so lovely together. I still want Spike and Drusilla to get back together. I want to like Spike/Buffy, but that's Drusilla's man and to my mind, he can only be shared with Angel and Darla. lol. I write Spike everyone but I still hope that in a century or two, they will get back together.

I feel like she might try to sire a spike look alike and then a poet before finding a different sort all together who also was yearning for something effulgent. A dreamer and a lover, someone who is willing to put up the armor and be her knight. Someone who will treat her like their muses. For some reason, my mind is thinking of a sculptor.

Meant to do this sooner
The smell of plaster replaced the smell of blood that had pervaded the street outside the studio. Inside, it was all sketches and wooden tables and compartmentalized tools, just as he had left it the day before. Now, the true art form had been found in the murder of critics and innocents alike, and the two vampires entered the former sanctuary of the artist with a shared style of detached interest. The younger one shook his head in amazement and chuckled softly. “I was a fool,” he said.

His sire said nothing to deny it, but she ran her fingers through the chalky dust on the nearest flat surface and pressed them to his cheek, marking him with white fingerprints as she had done earlier with red ones. “Show me,” she purred. “Show me all that was you.”

He took her hand and led her to a stand against the opposite wall, bearing a large bust that eclipsed the beauty of all the other sculptures in the studio. “It's you,” he said unnecessarily. The woman portrayed could be none other than her; features locked in seductive majesty, hair sweeping wildly over her twisting shoulders. “This is what I wanted you to see. Though now it seems...I was arrogant to even try, to think I could capture you. If I had known what you truly are...”

“Your terror would have eviscerated you. Owl with a mouse, talons in your heart.”

He nodded gravely, studying the white planes of the bust. “After you came to me, I couldn't think of anything else. You were my life already, Drusilla. You are the unholy goddess I was meant for since the moment of my birth. This--” he gestured with disgust at his representation of her face-- “this is not you.”

The vampiress shook her head. “No.” She reached out with both hands and picked up the heavy sculpture as if it weighed no more than a porcelain doll, then lifted it over her head and threw it to the ground. “See,” she said, excitement igniting her eyes even as shattered pieces of her skidded across the floor, “now it's me.”

Brava! I hope you have posted this elsewhere because I loved this. You captured her while and you created a original character without even mentioning his name. If you write more on this, I'd be interested in seeing it. The ending is brilliant though. :)

Cool, glad you liked! I'm going to go post it on my own LJ now; not sure what its destiny will be from there. The "Five People Drusilla Sired" was a cool idea-- if I wasn't so flaky I would have done four others before this one.

Dru is one of my favorite characters. I'm always annoyed she didn't get more screentime (except that I suppose it helped her to survive). She's a fascinating mixture of childlike innocence and seductive evil, and her dialogue is just fun. A lot of what you guys have been saying about how her insanity might be more about communication issues for someone seeing a much bigger picture is very intriguing.

P.S. Kairos's icon (and mine, obviously) came from this drawing I did a while back.
Staringiscaring: abedtroystaringiscaring on November 20th, 2010 09:04 pm (UTC)
Yeah, above there is a comment about what a shame it was that Drusilla didn't get any present day scenes in season five of Angel. They had her for an episode but she didn't interact with souled Spike or the slowly morally decaying Angel which would have made for some awesome scenes. I get annoyed by how many Spike centric episodes that their were in season five but I wouldn't have minded a Spike episode that had Drusilla visiting W&H.

Lovely drawing! That is fab, you caught their personalities well. I love Darla's eyebrow arch especially. Fanged Four, they are my OT4 forever. Now I want to read fanged four fic but it seems like I've read them all. :(
